Tap into Modern Kitchen Accessories

There was a time when a tap was just a tap. It was a vessel allowing us to access water. Now, with bespoke kitchens so popular, home owners are customising their taps to suit their individual lifestyles.

Of course, it’s not only taps that buyers of handmade kitchens are turning their focus to nowadays – other kitchen accessories such as backsplashes and even the sink itself is getting hummed and hawed over as well. But in this post, we’re pouring all our energies into the humble – or perhaps not so humble – kitchen tap.

Type of taps

Pillar taps, monobloc taps, mixer taps, taps with pull-out spray and those with LED light changing colours to let you know the temperature of the water – there’s a whole world of taps out there. And that’s only the design. After you have opted for which taps you like best then it’s time to focus on the finish. From chrome to brass and matt black, that’s another decision you have to sit down and make. And it’s why when choosing a handmade kitchen your kitchen designer is always on hand to advise.

First things first…

Before even looking at a tap, it’s important that you check your home’s water pressure. That’s because certain taps only work with a particular amount of pressure (over one bar) and the last thing you want is to purchase a tap that has to be sent back, causing you a further wait before you can get cooking in your new bespoke kitchen.

Traditional taps

Here at Classic Kitchens Direct we specialise in Shaker-style kitchens. The reason being they look sophisticated, classic and never date. They are also much sought-after – especially bespoke designs. Being a traditional design, customers often opt for a traditional tap in keeping with the Shaker philosophy for simple but quality items.

Pillar taps are two separate taps with either cross-head or lever handles, and you can find them in a range of different finishes, such as chrome or antique brass.

Mixer taps

As the name suggests, you will get a mix of cold and hot water via the same spout. This means you’ll always be able to find the perfect water temperature for your sink without much effort. Choose from a single lever or double handled versions (the former being the most popular due to its ease of use). For something a little different, it’s possible to have wall-mounted taps for your handmade kitchen.

Pull-out taps

The type of tap favoured by designers of commercial bespoke kitchens, the pull-out is excellent for focusing the water spray exactly where you want it. After you’ve managed to clean that pot, for instance, you can just take your flexible spray head and shoot it around the sink for a quick and easy clean. They are also a great way for filling the kettle – just sit it down on the worktop near enough for the nozzle to reach. And talking of the kettle…

Boiling water taps

Relatively new to kitchen design, boiling water taps are taps which instantly provide water hot enough to make coffee with. You could also use them to fill a pot of water to cook vegetables or rice. The type of tap frees up space on the worktop where the kettle would have sat. Another benefit is that it will cut down on energy bills since there is no wasted hot water (and which makes up for the added cost of buying such a tap in the first place). From a safety point of view these are fine with children around since safety catches can be fitted.

Filter taps

For homeowners who don’t like the taste of tap water (and this varies depending on where in the UK you are), then a filter tap can prove the perfect choice. That’s because it provides pure chemical-free water, literally on tap. In other words, there will be no limescale or chlorine contained in your drink. All that’s required by you is changing the filter now and again.
