Why Hanker over a Handmade Kitchen?

The kitchen has always traditionally been at the heart of the home – and certainly, no more so than today. Our desire for open-plan living means it is on-show like never before. And it is why more and more home owners are opting for a handmade kitchen rather than mass-produced.

Yes, a bespoke kitchen will cost more than a kitchen you can pick up at your local home improvement shop, but there’s a reason for that; a few great reasons, in fact and here they are right here:

1. A handmade kitchen fits perfectly

Annoying little nooks and crannies in your century-old home that you’ve never known what to do with in the past, become stand-out features in a handmade kitchen. That’s because your new bespoke kitchen will be created specially with the shape of your room in mind. Nothing looks awkward or out of place any more.

And with that in mind, you will also be amazed at the amount of storage you have suddenly gained. An Aga can be incorporated into a large chimney breast, for instance, looking like it’s been there forever. Or, if you already have your cooker planned for elsewhere in the room, what about beautiful handcrafted open timber shelving in that alcove? You could use them to display precious crockery and other favourite kitchenware.

At the same time, slimline cabinets at the end of run units – usually next to a washing machine or dish washer – are a godsend for storing condiment bottles and using up otherwise-redundant space. In the words of a well-known supermarket “every little helps.”

A bespoke kitchen: it’s all about you!

You know how you’ve always fancied a shaker style handmade kitchen but in a shade of red that you just can’t find anywhere? Well, with a bespoke kitchen your craftsmen will mix and mingle shades until the colour is spot on. Not only that but if it is deep drawers you want (cos you can’t stand pots and pans sitting in a rack) then wait no more!

It makes perfect sense to have a kitchen designed especially for you. If you often entertain, for instance, then you will certainly need a lot of prep space and will probably prefer two ovens and a heat rack. If you happen to be a bit of a fitness and health guru-type then you will need plenty of worktop space for your juicer, liquidiser, scales and other gadgets.

Love the idea of a cosy country-style handmade kitchen? Then you might want a bench seat under the window and a large dining table rather than a kitchen island.

Handmade kitchens last forever

Probably the best bit about having a handmade kitchen is that it will last for ever. It won’t date – because it’s not all about trends. And, if you fancy a change maybe 10 years or so down the line, then your craftsman can come back with a few more cupboard or open shelving ideas.

And yes, your handmade kitchen will last a decade – and more. That’s because the quality materials used in a handcrafted kitchen can be relied upon not to warp or the wood to split with all the wear and tear cooking in a kitchen inevitably entails. You can be assured your cabinets will be produced from oak, birch and other quality woods – rather than manufactured MDF. The joints will be whittled in order to fit perfectly, rather than the units just glued together. In other words, every stage of the building process in a handmade kitchen, from the design to build is delivered with quality in mind.

Meanwhile, if you do hanker after a change a few years down the line, well, it is amazing what a difference a lick of paint can make.

A handmade kitchen is sustainable

We are all becoming increasingly environmentally aware these days – and this is another reason why bespoke kitchens are increasing in popularity. Wood used for a handcrafted kitchens tends to be from sustainable sources ie another tree is planted in its place. Delivering locally means there is very little carbon footprint too. If these matter to you then investing in a handmade kitchen is pretty much guilt-free.
